Biography

Susanna Phillips Newbury (she/her) is an associate professor of art history at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She completed her undergraduate degree at Oberlin College, and her Ph.D. at Yale University.

Her research and teaching interests focus on the social history of 20th and 21st century art, histories of photography and architecture, urban studies, and economic geography. Her first book, The Speculative City (University of Minnesota Press, 2021) was a finalist for the College Art Association's Charles Rufus Morey award. Other recent publications include “We Ours Us" in Susan Silton: Diving into the Wreck (Inventory Press, 2026), "Clarissa Tossin: Falling from Earth" (caareviews.org, 2023), "The Art of Witnessing" in the edited volume Aesthetics of Gentrification (Amsterdam University Press, 2021) and "Anti-Sitcom Video Art" in The Microgenre (Bloomsbury, 2020).
