Shona Rue, MSN, RN, CPNP, CNE
Senior Lecturer
Biography
Shona Rue joined the UNLV School of Nursing in July 2000 and serves as a clinical instructor and senior lecturer. She is a nationally certified pediatric nurse practitioner (CPNP), certified nurse educator (CNE), and one of the longest serving academic faculty in the School of Nursing.
She served as the faculty advisor of the UNLV chapter of the Student Nurses Association for over 15 years and currently provides nursing career presentations and outreach activities to the community and the Clark County School District at all levels. She is an active volunteer with the Las Vegas, Nevada chapter of Project Sunshine at Sunrise Hospital, Summerlin Hospital, and Cure for Kids outpatient center as well as volunteers with the Stop the Bleed program, and The Just One Project. Throughout her years at UNLV, she has chaired and served on multiple department, school, and university committees.
Expertise
Rue is a pediatric nurse, nationally certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner (CPNP) with the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCP), an active fellow member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurses and Practitioners (NAPNAP), and a certified nurse educator (CNE) with the National League for Nursing (NLN). Her scholarship interests are nursing education and pediatrics. She has featured teaching innovations in the Nurse Educator Journal and the Journal of Nursing Education.
Classes Taught
Rue has taught nursing courses at all levels from pre-nursing through graduate level nursing. Most of her teaching focuses on assessment, pediatrics, and population health. Additionally, she has taught online, hybrid, didactic, labs, and clinical courses in the traditional BSN program, RN-BSN, and MSN programs.
Education Background
She completed her pre-nursing/pre-health courses at the University of Oregon and then went on to earn her BSN from the Oregon Health & Sciences University. She received her MSN in nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University with a PNP focus at the Medical College of Virginia.
Research or Scholarship
Her research interests are interprofessional education, nursing innovation, and pediatric nursing care.
Awards, recognitions, or group affiliations
Rue is the recipient of the 2006 and 2015 UNLV SON Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. She was also awarded a UNLV mini grant while serving as the Nurse Camp Director in 2022 and 2023. She holds active membership in two chapters of Sigma Theta Tau International – Gamma Omega chapter and Zeta Kappa Chapter; and she was awarded the Zeta Kappa at Large Continuing Education Scholarship for Nurse Camp at the Nurse Educator Institute 2023. She has also been recognized by the Nevada Nurses Foundation as a Shining Star 50 under 50 recipient.
