Shona Rue, MSN, RN, CPNP, CNE
Senior Lecturer
Biography
Shona Rue joined the UNLV School of Nursing in 2000 and serves as a senior lecturer and clinical instructor. She is a nationally certified pediatric nurse practitioner (CPNP), certified nurse educator (CNE), and one of the School of Nursing’s longest-serving faculty members. Her career reflects a longstanding commitment to nursing education, student mentorship, pediatric nursing, and community engagement.
For more than 15 years, she served as faculty advisor for the UNLV chapter of the National Student Nurses’ Association and continues to provide nursing career presentations and educational outreach to the Clark County School District and the broader community. She is an active volunteer with the Las Vegas chapter of Project Sunshine, bringing play and therapeutic activities to pediatric patients at local hospitals and outpatient centers. She is passionate about interprofessional education and collaborates across disciplines to develop innovative learning experiences that strengthen communication, teamwork, and clinical competence. Throughout her time at UNLV, she has chaired and served numerous department, School of Nursing, and university committees.
Expertise
Rue is a nationally certified pediatric nurse practitioner (CPNP) through the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB), a fellow of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP), and a certified nurse educator (CNE) through the National League for Nursing (NLN). Her areas of expertise include pediatric nursing, nursing education, interprofessional education, and professional communication. Her teaching innovations and scholarship have been featured in Nurse Educator, Journal of Nursing Education, and Journal of Investigative Medicine.
Classes Taught
Rue has taught nursing students at all levels, from pre-nursing through graduate education. Her teaching focuses primarily on health assessment, pediatric nursing, senior preceptorship, population health, and clinical education. She has taught online, hybrid, didactic, laboratory, and clinical courses across traditional BSN, RN-BSN, and MSN programs.
Education Background
She completed her pre-nursing and pre-health coursework at the University of Oregon before earning her BSN from the Oregon Health Sciences University. She received her MSN in nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University, with a focus in pediatric nurse practitioner practice through the Medical College of Virginia.
Research or Scholarship
Her scholarship interests include interprofessional education, nursing education innovation, professional communication, and pediatric nursing care. Her work focuses on developing innovative educational strategies that strengthen communication, clinical competence, collaboration, and student learning.
Awards, recognitions, or group affiliations
Rue is the recipient of the 2006 and 2015 UNLV School of Nursing Dean’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching. She received a UNLV Young Rebels mini grant while serving as the nurse camp director in 2022 and 2023. She maintains active membership in two chapters of Sigma Theta Tau International—Gamma Omega and Zeta Kappa—and received the Zeta Kappa-at-Large continuing education scholarship for nurse camp at the 2023 Nurse Educator Institute. She was also recognized by the Nevada Nurses Foundation as a Shining Star 50 Under 50 recipient.
