Biography

Dr. Sandra L. Pierre-Louis is an Assistant Professor-in-Residence at the UNLV School of Nursing. She began her academic career at UNLV as an adjunct faculty member in 2022 and transitioned to a full-time faculty role in 2025. Dr. Pierre-Louis teaches across undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, bringing a wealth of clinical expertise and a strong commitment to student-centered education.

Expertise

Dr. Pierre-Louis began her nursing career in 2004 as a Registered Nurse, gaining extensive experience in high-acuity environments such as the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit. She is dual-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C) and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), with over 15 years of advanced clinical practice. Her expertise includes being a family nurse practitioner, focusing on chronic disease management in older adults, primary care, and psychiatric mental health.

In addition to her clinical roles, Dr. Pierre-Louis is certified in wound care and has held leadership positions within Medicare Advantage organizations, where she oversaw clinical operations and led multidisciplinary teams. Her ability to work effectively with diverse patient populations and her commitment to holistic, compassionate, and evidence-based care underscore her dedication to excellence in healthcare delivery.

Classes Taught

As a clinical instructor, Dr. Pierre-Louis teaches in the PMHNP Post-Master's Program. Clinical classes taught include Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner I: Assessment and Diagnosis of Psychiatric Mental Health Disorders Across the Lifespan, Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner II: Psychopharmacology Across the Lifespan, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner III: Psychotherapy and Non-pharmacologic Management Across the Lifespan.

The clinical class taught in the Direct Entry MSN (DEMSN) Program includes NURS 519 Mental Health Nursing.

Education Background

Dr. Pierre-Louis earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in 2022. She also holds a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) as a Family Nurse Practitioner, which she was awarded in 2010. She completed a post-master’s certificate as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2019. In 2024, she earned an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education from UNLV. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), graduating with Dean’s Honor Roll distinction in 2004.

Education Background

Dr. Pierre-Louis’s Doctoral project, "Identifying Gaps in Social Determinants of Health Among Patients 65 Years and Older with Congestive Heart Failure: A Secondary Data Analysis" (2022), was accepted for inclusion in the UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones collection through Digital Scholarship@UNLV. The project highlights disparities in care for older adults living with CHF.

In addition, Dr. Pierre-Louis presented a virtual poster at the Western Institute of Nursing (WIN) Conference: Pierre-Louis, S. (2021, April). Nurse follow-up intervention model to decrease hospital readmission rate in congestive heart failure geriatric patients: An abstract presentation. Awards, recognitions, or group affiliations

Dr. Pierre-Louis serves as Secretary for the Nevada Chapter of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA), and as a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), Symposium Advanced Wound Care (SAWC), the Nevada Advanced Practice Nurses Association (NAPNA), and Western Regional Advanced Practice Nurses Network (WRAPNN). She has received numerous awards recognizing her work in nursing and nursing education:
