Biography

Richard Baynosa, MD, FACS, a professor and founding chair of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, also serves as the chair of the surgery department at University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, the only Level 1 trauma center in the region.

He also serves as the chief of plastic surgery at Mountain View Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Baynosa's practice features comprehensive plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. He specializes in advanced aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery including DIEP and perforator free flaps. He offers the full range of primary and secondary cosmetic breast surgery, from breast augmentation with silicone and saline implants and mastopexy/breast lift, to difficult revision breast surgery and breast shaping after massive weight loss.

A graduate of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Dr. Baynosa was the first surgeon to offer DIEP free flap breast reconstruction in the state of Nevada and, recognizing the tremendous need for this procedure in Southern Nevada, has either trained or recruited onto UNLV Health faculty all of the plastic surgeons that currently offer the procedure in Las Vegas.

Completing a residency in general surgery, as well as a fellowship in hand and microsurgery at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Dr. Baynosa also trained at the University Hospital of Ghent in Belgium with one of the originators of the DIEP flap technique, completing a fellowship with world-renowned plastic surgeons, Dr. Phillip Blondeel and Dr. Moustapha Hamdi.

Dr. Baynosa’s breast reconstruction practice covers the full spectrum of options available including the use of tissue expanders, direct-to-implant reconstruction, fat grafting, latissimus dorsi flap, and numerous other flap options. His practice specializes in patients who have previously failed breast reconstructions due to radiation injury and/or infection with numerous options for improving symmetry in breast reconstruction. He most frequently performs these immediate breast reconstructions with his wife, Jennifer Baynosa, MD, an associate professor of surgical breast oncology with the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine and physician at UNLV Health, who completed the prestigious Susan G. Komen Breast Fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Dr. Baynosa has become internationally recognized as a pioneer in robotic surgery techniques in pelvic reconstruction after surgery for colorectal, gynecologic, and urologic cancer surgeries. He has performed more Robotic Rectus Abdominis Muscle (RRAM) flaps than anyone currently in the world with his most recent experience published in the premiere peer-reviewed journal of the specialty, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2022.

He serves on numerous national committees, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS), the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons (ACAPS), the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM) and is the current President of the Mountain West Society of Plastic Surgeons (MWSPS). Dr. Baynosa currently serves as an associate editor of the most widely circulated publication in plastic surgery, Plastic Surgery News, and is the vice chair of the premier online educational resource of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Education Network (EdNet).
