Peter Kaufmann joined the School of Integrated Health Sciences in 2022 after a long career at the National Institutes of Health, providing leadership for major cardiovascular clinical trials. In addition to serving as chief of the Behavioral Medicine and Prevention Branch at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), he served as acting director of the NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research and senior scientist at the NHLBI Center for Translation Research and Implementation Science. For a decade, he served on the Clinical Trials Network Data and Safety Monitoring Board for the National Institute on Drug Abuse and created the renowned NIH Summer Institute on Behavioral Randomized Clinical Trials.

Kaufmann's work has earned numerous awards from the director of the National Institutes of Health and the director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, as well as from professional societies. He was elected Fellow of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, President of the Society of Behavioral Medicine, and served on the board of the International Society of Behavioral Medicine. After more than 30 years at NIH, he returned to academia, where he continues to develop clinical trials through the Clinical Trials Forum and other venues. Kaufmann has served on NIH review panels of clinical trial proposals, from major mental disorders to cardiovascular diseases. His clinical research expertise is rounded out by several epidemiological studies, including CHAMPS, a longitudinal study of the health of clinical staff who served during the COVID-19 epidemic. In addition to serving as the associate dean of research, he teaches a graduate course on Randomized Clinical Trials and another on Grant Writing in the Health Sciences.
