Biography

Julia Y. Lee, Ph.D., researches competitive advantage and emergence within and across organizations, drawing on the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities. Her current work develops a theory of human capital complementarity emergence through mergers & acquisitions and strategic alliances, comparing startups with incumbents in the emerging gene therapy industry. A second stream of research investigates the effects of socio-cognition and entrepreneurial identity on industry emergence. Methodologically, she employs a pluralistic approach that integrates multilevel analysis, social network analysis, participant observation, structural topic modeling, and sentiment analysis.

Lee earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University at Albany, SUNY, and received professional training in management and business analytics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before beginning her academic career, she worked at a Japanese international publisher and freelanced in the cultural and film industries in Taiwan. She also holds an M.A. in sociology from National Taiwan University and a B.A. in communication with a minor in Japanese studies from National Cheng-Chi University.
