Biography
Chia Liang Dai, Ph.D., is a tenured associate professor of health education in the sports and physical activity program at UNLV. He received his Ph.D. in health promotion and education with a concentration in counselor education and supervision from the University of Cincinnati. He is an active certified health education specialist (CHES®) registered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. His professional background includes serving as an elementary school teacher, a team sports coach (including baseball, basketball, soccer, and track and field), a school counselor, and a military mental health counselor in Taiwan. His work is dedicated to promoting whole-person health and wellness in the K-16 school and community settings. He investigates three intertwined research strands: (1) utilization of integrative approaches, including exercise, yoga, and healthy eating, to facilitate health behavior change; (2) the evaluation of health education and physical activity programs; and (3) the association between family/cultural factors and risky behaviors. A central component of his current research involves the application of the Multi-Theory Model (MTM) of health behavior change to address various health issues. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, including Alternative Therapies in Health & Medicine, International Journal of Environmental Research & Public Health, Journal of Child & Family Studies, Journal of Physical Education & Sport, Journal of Primary Care & Community Health, Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, Substance Use & Addiction, and Substance Abuse: Research & Treatment. He was named the 2023 School Health Professional of the Year by the American School Health Association and currently serves as an affiliate scholar for the UNLV Sports Innovation Institute. He has served on the editorial boards for the Journal of School Health, Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, and the Journal of Global Education and Research. He continues to partner with organizations like the Greater Youth Sports Association to provide after-school programs to underserved children in Southern Nevada.
Research Expertise
Health behavior change research (Multi-Theory Model (MTM)), health education program evaluation, mental health and counseling, mind-body practices (specifically school-based yoga and mindfulness meditation), obesity prevention, social-emotional learning through sports, substance use cessation (cannabis, vaping, and tobacco), and cultural/family studies.
