Amy Mathis-Leonard is the director of the MLC, providing collaborative leadership for corequisite and gateway math curricula, instruction, scheduling, instructor training, and student support across UNLV first-year mathematics courses.

Amy is a native Las Vegan who spent 18 years teaching mathematics in the Clark County School District before coming to UNLV. After high school, she served in the U.S. Navy aboard a ship stationed in San Diego, CA. Following an honorable discharge, she earned a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of North Texas in 1998. She went on to earn her M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction, with an emphasis in secondary mathematics, from UNLV in 2010. Amy began her UNLV career in 2022 as the gateway math placement coordinator while pursuing her Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction, with an emphasis in mathematics education, graduating in 2026. Her academic research focuses on methods to improve undergraduate corequisite math instruction.
