The school awards annual scholarships to pre-doctoral students pursuing a degree at the School of Dental Medicine. Scholarships are awarded based on criteria established by the private donor and UNLV. Factors for scholarship, depending on the donor organization, may include:

  • GPA
  • Financial need
  • Ethnicity
  • Class rank
  • Gender

The school's director of financial aid & scholarship sends an email annually to all students inviting them to apply for available awards.

Scholarship Overview

UNLV Dental Medicine Scholarships

The Regents Higher Education Opportunity Award is available to new incoming students to the UNLV School of Dental Medicine (UNLV SDM). Admitted students to UNLV SDM are automatically considered by the UNLV SDM Scholarship Committee. This award is a yearly renewable scholarship based on maintaining a 3.4 cumulative grade point average, being in good academic standing and possessing ethical and professional standards per the expectations of the UNLV School of Dental Medicine. Scholarship eligibility is reviewed at the end of each semester.

Scholarship awards are divided evenly between the fall, spring, and summer semesters and are credited directly to your tuition account. You must complete each semester for which you are to receive a scholarship award; that portion of your scholarship award applicable to any semester that you do not complete must be returned to the UNLV School of Dental Medicine.

This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Dr. Thomas P. Nowlin, a distinguished dental educator and Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences UNLV School of Dental Medicine. It will be awarded to one student annually as support and encouragement to pursue a career in dental education.

The Scholarship recipient(s) must meet the following criteria per the Memorandum of Understanding between the Foundation and the SDM:

  • Student must be formally admitted and degree seeking the UNLV School of Dental Medicine
  • Student must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or higher
  • Student must be a Nevada resident
  • Preference will be given to past recipients of the Dr. Thomas P. Nowlin Scholarship.

Applicants should:

  • Be a registered DS-2, 3 or Ds-4 level student in good standing at UNLV SDM;
  • Have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or higher; and
  • Be a Nevada resident.

Preference will be given to past recipients of the Dr. Thomas P. Nowlin Scholarship. Recipients may reapply for this scholarship in subsequent years, provided they maintain the scholarship criteria stated above.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • A passion for learning
  • A record of teaching activities
  • A plan for becoming an educator who contributes to the teaching of students consistent with the educational leadership demonstrated by Dr. Nowlin. Applications shall include a current curriculum vitae and a 500-1000 word essay addressing the criteria above.

This scholarship was established for outstanding students at the School of Dental Medicine.

It will be awarded to one student annually to support in decreasing the financial burden of students at the School of Dental Medicine.

The Scholarship recipient(s) must meet the following criteria:

  • Student must be formally admitted and degree seeking the UNLV School of Dental Medicine.
  • Student must be in good standing at the UNLV School of Dental Medicine.
  • Student must demonstrate charitable conduct.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Good Standing (academic standing, projects, research, publications, participation, grade point average etc.)
  • Charitable Conduct (contributions, volunteerism, philanthropy, assistance, service, etc.)

UNLV Dental Medicine students in their second year are invited to apply for the Dean's Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is established for well-rounded dental students who successfully completed year one at the School of Dental Medicine and who are academically driven, community service oriented and who possess leadership qualities.

The Dean's Scholarship will be awarded to one second year student annually to support dental students showing promise and who may be interested in pursuing an academic faculty career after dental school.

The Scholarship recipient(s) must meet the following criteria:

  • Student must be a second year dental student (DS2) at the UNLV School of Dental Medicine.
  • Student must have a current cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75.
  • Student must be in good standing at the UNLV School of Dental Medicine.
  • Student must be academically driven, community service oriented and possess leadership qualities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate they are a well-rounded student in their second year of dental school with a competitive grade point average, a passion for scholarship, with community service and leadership experience.

This scholarship was established "to honor Lucy Hobbs, the first woman in dentistry. Born in 1833, Lucy was refused admission to dental school because of her gender. But she persevered, eventually learning dentistry as an apprentice, graduating from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery, and becoming the first licensed female dentist in 1866. Her leadership, courage and success paved the way for other women".

Criteria

  • Student must be formally admitted and degree seeking the UNLV School of Dental Medicine
  • Student must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or higher

Applicants should:

  • Be a registered DS-3 or DS-4 level student
  • Have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or higher; and

  • A plan for becoming an agent of change by creating an inclusive, encouraging environment for women of all backgrounds.

This scholarship is targeted toward a dental student who gives back to less fortunate communities.

Applications shall include a current curriculum vitae and a 500–1000 word essay addressing the criteria above in addition to referencing how they listen and better understand the insights and needs of women, give back to the community, and make a positive difference in the practice of healthcare.
