May. 30, 2025

UNLV is monitoring recent developments that may impact international students and scholars applying for F-1 and J-1 visas to enter the United States. As of May 27, 2025, the U.S. Department of State has been instructed to pause the scheduling of new visa appointments for the F-1, J-1, and M-1 immigration categories. While we do not yet have full details, it has been suggested that the U.S. Department of State may be updating visa applicant vetting procedures, particularly as they relate to content posted on your personal social media accounts.

We understand that this uncertainty may be concerning, and we are committed to monitoring the situation and keeping you informed. Here is what you need to know at this time:

  • If you have a visa appointment scheduled: Please keep and attend your appointment. Arrive on time with all of your required documents and be prepared to discuss your academic program at UNLV. You may also be required to provide information about the social media accounts you use. These may be reviewed to ensure that there are no comments or posts that could be interpreted as political in nature.
  • If you do not have a visa appointment scheduled and plan to begin your studies at UNLV in fall 2025: Please wait to schedule your appointment until we provide additional guidance. We are monitoring the situation closely and will share updates as soon as they become available.
  • If you are a current student with an active SEVIS record, but have an expired visa: Do not leave the United States at this time unless absolutely necessary. You will not be permitted to reenter the U.S. without a valid F-1 or J-1 visa, and appointments may not currently be available.

We know this situation may be stressful, especially as you prepare for the fall semester. Please know that you’re not alone. UNLV Global is here to support you and help you stay connected this summer.
