The fourth installment of the Workday Security Roles series highlights the two most important finance position-based Workday security roles and seven functions available to these roles.  

Human Resources (HR) Finance Coordinator

The HR finance coordinator role is assigned to positions that have the authority and accountability to approve and commit funding for personnel transactions. The HR finance coordinator is assigned to the cost center. This role is uniquely considered a cross-functional HR/FIN role. Positions with this role can complete the following transactions in Workday:

  • Initiate and approve HR transactions to commit funds for staffing including hires, transfers, terminations, etc.
  • Initiate and approve cost allocations
  • Initiate and approve default organizations
  • Initiate and approve compensation changes 
  • Initiate and approve payroll accounting adjustments 
  • View and modify staffing organizations
  • Run weekly, monthly, and semi-monthly HCM audit reports 

Cost Center Manager

The cost center manager role is assigned to positions that have the authority and accountability to approve and commit funds during financial transactions. The cost center manager is assigned to the cost center. 

This role is a single-instance role, which means only one position can hold this role for any organization. This role cannot be shared. If a worker is away, they must delegate tasks.  If this position becomes vacant, this role must be assigned to another position.  This ensures that finance transactions are monitored and approved continuously. Positions with this role can complete the following transactions in Workday:

  • Final fiscal approver when committing and spending funds
  • Approve accounting adjustments
  • Approve ad hoc payments and banking transactions
  • Approve asset accounting events
  • Approve organizational assignments
  • Approve spend authorizations, expense reports, requisitions, purchase orders, etc.
  • View manager financial reports
