UNLV’s Risk Management team has announced changes to the insurance coverage for university vehicles and mobile equipment. The update introduces a new Inland Marine policy and clarifies which assets are covered under existing programs.
No Change for Standard Vehicles
Most UNLV vehicles, such as cars, trucks, vans, and golf carts remain covered under the Nevada Attorney General’s (AG) Auto Program. This program provides both liability and physical damage coverage, including comprehensive and collision protection.
Older vehicles may only have liability coverage if the repair costs exceed a percentage of their current value.
Action: Departments should confirm that all standard vehicles are listed on the AG’s auto insurance schedule.
- Comprehension and Collision deductibles are $1,000 per incident for vehicles and $5,000 per incident for carts.
New Inland Marine Policy
Effective Oct. 1, the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) added an Inland Marine insurance policy. This policy covers physical damage for certain types of high-value vehicles and equipment that are not fully covered under the AG’s Auto Program. This policy does not replace the AG's primary auto program. Instead, it provides comprehensive and collision coverage for two specific categories of assets:
- Scheduled High-Value/Specialty Licensed Vehicles: This policy provides physical damage (comprehensive and collision) coverage for a specific schedule of large, high-value, or unique vehicles. Examples include:
- UNLV Winnebago dental mobile clinic
- UNLV hydro excavation truck
- UNR Ford E450 mobile clinic trucks
- Non-Licensed Mobile Equipment: This policy provides physical damage coverage for mobile equipment that is not licensed for highway use, such as contractors' equipment, farm machinery, forklifts, and high-value trailers.
Since the specialty vehicles listed above are licensed and driven on public roads, their liability coverage will still be carried by the NV Attorney General's Auto Program.
The new Inland Marine policy does not provide liability coverage for these specialty vehicles; liability coverage still falls under the NV Attorney General’s auto insurance program. The comprehensive and collision deductible for this Inland Marine policy is $10,000.00.
Summary of Coverage and Required Actions
For standard vehicles such as cars, sedans, and standard trucks or vans, both liability and physical damage (comprehensive and collision) coverage are provided by the Nevada Attorney General’s Office. Departments should make sure each vehicle is listed on the AG’s schedule.
For large or specialty vehicles such as the UNLV Winnebago dental mobile clinic and the hydro excavation truck, liability coverage is provided by the Nevada Attorney General’s Office, while physical damage (comprehensive and collision) coverage is provided by the NSHE Inland Marine policy. Departments must take two actions: first, add the vehicle to the AG’s schedule for liability by contacting Risk Management and second, make sure the vehicle is on the Inland Marine schedule for physical damage.
For non-licensed mobile equipment, such as forklifts and farm equipment, there is no liability coverage unless the equipment is used on a public road. Physical damage coverage is provided by the NSHE Inland Marine policy. Departments should make sure the equipment is scheduled on the new Inland Marine policy.
Departments should review their vehicle and equipment inventories to ensure accuracy. If your department owns specialty vehicles or non-licensed mobile equipment, please contact the Risk Management office to confirm that they are properly covered. Be prepared to provide a detailed description of each item, including its current value.
Cost Allocation
The insurance premium cost for the new Inland Marine policy will be allocated back to each campus based on the value of its assets scheduled on that specific policy.
