Effective retroactively to July 1, 2025, the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) has increased the property damage deductible for NSHE and UNLV-owned property from $2,000 to $10,000. The change aligns with the start of NSHE’s fiscal year.
Impact on Departments
Property damage claims under $10,000 (buildings, contents, equipment, etc.) will be paid directly by the affected department up to the first $10,000.
Any costs above that threshold that are covered by the insurance will be reimbursed through NSHE. For example, if a department experiences $50,000 in property damage, it must pay the full amount up front. NSHE will then reimburse $40,000, reflecting the $10,000 deductible.
Utility Trailers and Vehicles
- Utility trailers are subject to a $25,000 deductible. If a trailer is valued at less than $25,000, it will instead be covered under the State of Nevada’s Auto Property Damage (APD) program.
- Vehicle insurance deductible will remain at $1,000 for comprehensive and collision claims under the APD program.
The new deductible applies to all departments filing property damage claims. Department leaders should factor these changes into their planning for potential property damage expenses.
