The Ombuds Office is pleased to announce the inaugural cohort of campus mediators.

Under the direction of David G. Schwartz, University Ombuds, campus mediators facilitate conversations between parties seeking mutually agreeable resolutions.  Mediation is a voluntary, informal, and facilitative process that provides an alternative to formal dispute resolution channels.  Campus mediators do not evaluate conflicts or provide final decisions.

Each campus mediator must pass the Boyd School of Law’s 40-hour Basic Mediation Essentials course and agree to serve in the mediation pool for three years. Mediators will also work with the Ombuds to assist in outreach to raise awareness of mediation while educating the campus to the benefits of it.

The Summer 2021 cohort of campus mediators is:

Lus Cruz, School of Nursing

Yvonne Houy, College of Fine Arts

Liane Lee, Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement

Ted Weisman, College of Education

“The campus mediators are an integral part of the revived Ombuds Office,” said UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield. “They will help to expand the range of mediation services that the office offers and will contribute to its vision of a more equitable university.”

To discuss how mediation can help to reduce conflicts in your work life, learn more about how mediation works, or to request a mediation session, please contact UNLV Ombuds David G. Schwartz at ombuds.unlv.edu or (702) 895-2242.

Those interested in becoming a campus mediator should contact the Ombuds Office.   Selection of the second mediator cohort will commence in November, 2021, with training in January, 2022.
