Dear University Community,

After nearly 30 years of dedicated service to UNLV, Dr. Fred Tredup has shared that he plans to retire from the university at the end of the calendar year.

Fred has been a mainstay at UNLV for decades, serving in leadership roles in student affairs and in the offices of the provost and president. For the past 16 years, he’s held the position of chief of staff to the president, where his calm demeanor and incredible depth of knowledge of both higher education and UNLV have helped multiple presidents navigate the complexities of university leadership. He had previously served in a similar capacity for the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, and from 1978 to 1985 he held positions in student services as director of residential life and as assistant dean of students.

A two-time UNLV graduate, Fred ran cross country for the Rebels in the mid-1970s and earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s in counseling here. As a student, alumnus, and staff member, he’s been connected to UNLV for more than 50 years, and his contributions to UNLV as an advisor, mentor, and administrator have been vast.

I want to particularly commend Fred for his leadership role in the university’s commencement ceremonies dating back to President Carol Harter’s tenure; his careful oversight of the Barrick Lecture Series; and for his role as an advisor, mentor, and co-chair of the Phillip J. Cohen Scholars Program since its inception in 2012.

Fred will transition to a senior advisor role in the president’s office for the remainder of his tenure at UNLV and continue to provide crucial support and leadership to the office. Please join me in congratulating Fred for his decades of exemplary service to our university and for all he’s done to help countless UNLV students and employees find success on our campus and beyond.

Warm wishes,

Chris Heavey
UNLV Interim President
