A man leans over a camera on a tripod in the desert at night. A leafless tree next to him is illuminated on one side by the light he holds in his hand. A bright planetary body shoots out beams above the dark horizon.

Dry Heat Launch: Art Writers Panel

Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art, West Gallery
Friday, May 19, 2023
6:30 p.m.

Help us celebrate the second issue of the Dry Heat art journal with a live panel event on May 19. Three local artists—Anthony Bondi, Brent Holmes, and Laurence Myers Reese—will be with us in the West Gallery to discuss the significance of art writing in Las Vegas and beyond.

Our new Dry Heat features writing by Las Vegas-based artists Nima Abkenar, Gig Depio, and Julian Kilker, along with an examination of contemporary Iranian protest graffiti by a citizen of Iran who goes by the pseudonym Ain/Amal. Ain/Amal is responding to themes in Abkenar's essay, which is a meditation on his current predicament as a displaced Iranian living in Las Vegas while history-making events are happening in his homeland. Meanwhile, Depio ponders the role of painting in the fast-paced contemporary world, and Kilker describes his idiosyncratic photographic practice as he affirms the value of the desert as a place for artistic experimentation.

You can read Dry Heat online or pick up a free hard copy at this event.

The event takes place at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art on Friday, May 19, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. Entry is free. Masks are recommended. Parking on the UNLV campus is free after 1 p.m. on Fridays. Dry Heat is supported in part by Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

About the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art
The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art believes everyone deserves access to art that challenges our understanding of the present and inspires us to create a future that holds space for us all. Located on the campus of one of the most racially diverse universities in the U.S., we strive to create a nourishing environment for those who continue to be neglected by contemporary art museums. As the only art museum in the city of Las Vegas, we commit ourselves to leveling barriers that limit access to the arts. Our collection of artworks offers an opportunity for everyone to develop a deeper knowledge of contemporary art in Southern Nevada. The Marjorie Barrick Museum is part of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
