  • Every Gift Makes a Difference

John Starkey, '10 BA Marketing, '12 M.Ed. Education, is an academic advisor at UNLV's Lee Business School and teaches part-time in the school's first year seminar business communications courses. For most young kids, Disney World is the place of dreams and wonder. Not John Starkey. He vividly recalls watching a TV special on the happiest place on Earth when he was 8 or 9. It crushed his spirit because he couldn't imagine ever escaping small-town poverty and his family's cycle of addiction to make that trip. He's been there twice now and, with the support he found at UNLV, is taking on much bigger challenges. Hear his story, which he shared when he was a graduate student and a coach in UNLV's Academic Success Center.

Southern Nevada is a fossil-rich region, and the team's projects currently include paleontological, paleoecological, and taphonomic studies of Ediacaran invertebrates, late Paleozoic and Mesozoic vertebrate trackways, Cretaceous dinosaur-bearing strata, Miocene terrestrial ecosystems, and the Pleistocene megafauna.
