Biography

Mark Schlossman is a full professor in the Department of Physics at UIC. His research  group investigates fundamental and applied aspects of water interfaces, with a recent emphasis on phenomena at the interfaces between water and organic fluids. X-ray scattering and other techniques are used to provide a physical description of molecular-level processes at water surfaces and interfaces, with a recent emphasis on understanding extractant-assisted ion transfer, which is relevant for environmental remediation, water cleanup, and heavy metal separations. Mark is also a co-PI with NSF’s ChemMatCARS based at the University of Chicago. ChemMatCARS runs X-ray facilities at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, where Mark contributes to the development of this facility and uses it for his research.
