Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to share the news that Dr. Ann McDonough will step down from her position as founding dean of the Academic Success Center, effective June 30, 2024. She’ll be returning to her roots in the College of Fine Arts as a tenured professor in the Department of Theatre, where she looks forward to resuming her passion for the fine and performing arts.

Ann’s journey at UNLV has been a remarkable one. Appointed interim dean of University College in 2007, she played a pivotal role in transitioning the College into the new Academic Success Center, a hub for undergraduate student success on campus. Under her leadership, the center launched and expanded essential programs such as campus-wide tutoring, academic success coaching, supplemental instruction, and the largest First-Year Seminar program at UNLV.  In collaboration with campus partners, Ann was instrumental in establishing learning support services in strategic locations such as the Lied Library, the College of Engineering, campus housing, and the Dining Commons. These initiatives, among others, have significantly contributed to enhanced academic experiences and outcomes for our students.

Ann brought her passion for student success to our student athletes, as well.  In partnership with Athletics, she expanded the Student Athlete Academic Services, leading to numerous academic achievement records for student athletes.  Her efforts, in conjunction with the Lied Foundation Trust and the UNLV Division of Philanthropy, also led to the creation of the Hixson-Lied Success Scholars and the Jump Start Scholars programs, further cementing UNLV’s commitment to student success.  

Aside from her administrative achievements, Ann is a distinguished scholar in the field of Theatre, especially known for her work with older adults and Oral History Theatre. She has published numerous books and has been an active participant in the Broadway Teachers Workshop in New York. Her contributions have enriched not only the College of Fine Arts but also the broader arts community. Ann earned her PhD in Theatre from the University of Minnesota and came to our campus in 1990, the start of a long and influential career devoted to both academic and artistic excellence.

Ann’s dedication and leadership have left an indelible mark on the Academic Success Center and UNLV as a whole. As she transitions back to her faculty role, we celebrate her numerous accomplishments and contributions to our university. Please join us in extending our heartfelt thanks to Ann for her exemplary service and in wishing her continued success in her pursuits as a faculty member.
