The Office of Talent Acquisition in the Division of Human Resources has adopted a new criteria matrix to support search committees throughout the recruitment process. The criteria matrix is a spreadsheet used to facilitate search committee discussions about specific job responsibilities and qualifications, including:

  • What should or should not be a required or preferred qualification
  • How to rate the importance of each qualification (low, medium, or high)
  • How candidates will meet or exceed each qualification (screening criteria)
  • At what stage the qualifications will be evaluated (application, phone/virtual interviews, on-site interviews, references)
  • What questions to ask to assess candidate qualifications during interviews

A criteria matrix is most effective when prepared simultaneously with the job advertisement as it allows search committees to have intentional discussions from the beginning stages of recruitment. It should be completed at the start of the search process and before preparing PDQs for administrative faculty positions.

The How to Use a Criteria Matrix module in REBELearn includes an instructional video, templates, rubrics, and example matrices for academic and administrative faculty positions.
