Tyler and Jayla Olson

Tyler and Jayla Olson

Mar. 29, 2023

The UNLV MBA program has a rich history of helping students achieve their career goals. We had the pleasure of interviewing Jayla Olson, an MBA student expected to graduate in Fall 2023, and her father, Tyler Olson, who graduated from the program in Spring 2000.

Jayla has her bachelor's in biochemistry, and Tyler's is in radiologic technology. As non-business majors, Jayla and Tyler knew an MBA would give them a competitive edge and open doors to new opportunities. For Tyler, obtaining an MBA degree has opened doors to a new career path in finance and banking. He noted that the degree has given him the tools to succeed and has been a career boost in many ways. Jayla shared that the MBA program has been a completely different experience from her undergraduate studies, and the things she learns in class apply to her job.

As a father and daughter duo, they shared their favorite professors and classes in the program. Jayla brings up the MGT 711 - Seminar in Negotiation class with Dr. John Baur. "I enjoyed that class. He made such a dense subject so fun. Negotiation is one of those skills that I can use for the rest of my life," said Jayla.

Tyler reminisces about his favorite professor. "My favorite professor was Thomas Boyt. He taught a Services Marketing class. He was a class-act guy who graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, went to veterinarian school, and got a marketing Ph.D. He's retired now, but I still keep in touch."

Both father and daughter have had the pleasure of being taught marketing by Dr. Michael Mejza, while Dr. Bradley Wimmer and Dr. Jack Schibrowsky are other long-standing professors who have been teaching in the MBA program for quite some time. They have seen the program evolve over the years, with technological advancements, innovative teaching methods, and new professors bringing fresh perspectives to the curriculum.

Throughout the interview, Jayla and Tyler emphasized the importance of having a support system when going through the MBA program. For Tyler, his wife motivated him during the tough times, while Jayla noted that the professors and classmates are always there to lend a helping hand. Jayla and Tyler's story showcases the transformative power of education and how pursuing an MBA degree can bring people from all walks of life together. Their shared experience has strengthened their bond as father and daughter.

As we look toward the future of the UNLV MBA program, we are excited to provide students with innovative ways to learn, experienced professors, and a supportive community, giving our students the tools to advance and succeed in their careers.
