UNLV's College of Education held its second annual Ed Expo, a showcase of research led by the college's faculty and students. In addition to celebrating the excellent work and community partnerships, the college's Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) gave an update on the state of research awards and expenditures.

Poster Presentation Session

This year's poster session highlighted how research aligned with the college's strategic objectives:

  • Building and Sustaining a Diverse Educator Workforce
  • Increasing Access to High-Quality Educational and Mental Health Supports
  • Progressing the Conversation for Educational Practice and Policy
  • Improving Access to High-Quality Early Childhood Education

Presentations that featured the college's centers, labs, institutes, and offices (CLIOs), work of early career scholars, and work exploring and supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) topics was highlighted. 

COE's Research Mission

In discussing the current and future state of research in the college, Jonathan Hilpert, the interim director of ORSP shared the tenets of the office's research mission:

  • Cultivate research among COE and local, state, and national partners
  • Coordinate pre- and post-award services for grant/contract funded projects
  • Promote professional development in research and scholarship
  • Provide support and oversight for the college's 14 CLIOs

In the last year, ORSP managed 42 awards, totaling $25.2 million. In FY 2022, the college amazingly more than tripled its external funding over the previous year.

Internal Award Opportunities

Hilpert also announced the college has opened the 2023-2024 competition for internal funding available to COE faculty and students. Opportunities include:

  • COE Research Development Grants -- seed funding for faculty doc student collaborations
  • COE Equity Practice Grants -- critical/ resistance methodologies /forms of social justice inquiry)
  • Dissertation Completion Grants -- funding for students who have advanced to candidacy
