Volunteer

The Barrick Museum and UNLV Galleries offer a variety of opportunities for individuals interested in volunteering. For most volunteer positions the only requirement is an interest in visual arts, a love of learning, and a willingness to make a regular commitment. Applicants with special skills and training may be assigned to areas that require specific knowledge and work experience.

You are invited to apply to become a volunteer and join the excitement. We will work with you to provide the opportunity you expect.

Museum Volunteer Guidelines

All volunteers will be expected to:

  • Make minimum commitments of time
  • Be reliable in attendance and punctuality
  • Abide by museum policies
  • Attend training, if required
  • Collaborate with staff and other volunteers, accepting supervision and evaluation of your volunteer work

Volunteer Job Opportunities

Greeter

Greeters are stationed in the lobby and create the first impression of the museum. Greeters are available to answer questions about the museum and help insure that visitors get the most from their visit. Greeters also assist in maintaining the exhibit, lounge, and art bar. Weekday and Saturday positions available during normal business hours.

Collections or Exhibits Assistant

Collections assistants help maintain the Museum’s collections in a variety of ways including: digitizing records, database work, and inventory tracking. Exhibits assistants help maintain current exhibitions and may help install temporary exhibitions. Volunteers must be detail oriented and highly organized and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Weekday positions available during normal business hours.

Current Projects
  • Physical inventory of collection
  • Digitization of collection files
  • Reconciliation of database with collection files
  • General maintenance of  exhibit hall and lobby

Special Events Assistant

Special events occur throughout the calendar year and may occur on weekends and evening. Events take place at the Museum and at other venues. Volunteers help organize and work events. Availability of positions will vary according to projects. Positions determined by specific event.

Current Projects
  • Plan, promote and work special events, including: family days, tours, lectures, performances, readings, and film screenings.
  • Event calendaring

Administrative Assistant

Administrative assistants support on an as-needed basis; providing help with word processing (MS Word) and database entry (Excel, Access). Volunteers may also type letters, answer phones, file, make photocopies, assemble mailings or fill in for Museum staff. Weekday positions available during normal business hours.

Library Assistant

Library assistants help Museum staff with a variety of projects; including, cataloging new acquisitions, re-shelving, and general library organization.  This position requires an interest in librarianship, attention to detail, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Weekday positions available during normal business hours.

Current Projects
  • Shelve Books
  • Catalogue and organize journals, catalogues and magazines
  • Index theses and dissertations
  • Identify possible acquisitions
