Are you interested in transforming your traditional research paper assignment into a more engaging and relevant activity? Faculty are invited to join us on Wednesday, April 3 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Goldfield Room at Lied Library for "Wikipedia the Classroom: Engage Students with an Open Research Assignment."
In this faculty workshop, we explore the benefits of having students contribute to one of the most dynamic and ubiquitous information sources: Wikipedia.
Students editing Wikipedia don't produce "disposable" assignments; instead, they gain practical research, attribution, and synthesis skills, all while sharing valuable information typically hidden behind paywalls. Research indicates that students feel a stronger sense of ownership and pride when their work reaches a broader audience, such as Wikipedia's global readership.
In this workshop, we will:
- Discuss the benefits of open pedagogy and shifting from traditional to more engaging, collaborative, and creative collaborative research projects.
- Introduce educational resources created by UNLV Libraries faculty and staff that can assist you in incorporating Wikipedia into your classroom.
- Brainstorm ways to integrate this approach into your teaching at whatever level you are interested in - from a single class session to a semester-long assignment.
Join us to discover how Wikipedia editing can improve student engagement, enhance research skills, and contribute to the broader information community.
Lunch will be provided. Register.
