Dear Campus Community,

As you have seen in the national news, university campuses around the country are dealing with protests concerning the war in Israel and Gaza. We know that this can be a highly emotional issue for some. The UNLV administration will continue to have ongoing dialogue with faculty and student groups on our campus to hear their issues and concerns.

However, the disruption of learning, protest encampments, occupation of buildings, and destruction of property that we have seen at other campuses goes against UNLV’s values and policies and we do not consider it free speech.

We want to make you aware of an incident that happened on the Maryland Parkway campus Thursday night.  At approximately 7 p.m. on May 2, University Police arrested and charged a California woman with misdemeanor vandalism for defacing UNLV property. The woman was also trespassed from our campuses for two years, meaning she cannot be on UNLV property for that period of time.

The suspect allegedly defaced a “UNLV Strong” sign in Pida Plaza with the words "Free Palestine." The sign was removed and will be replaced before commencement. 

The incident serves as a reminder that UNLV’s policy on Speech and Advocacy and use of outdoor areas clearly outline the expectations we have for our university community and the community at-large relative to supporting and protecting free speech. Violations of these policies will not be tolerated.

These policies apply to everyone who visits our campuses. It is our responsibility to ensure that every individual adheres to and follows those policies and rules for the benefit of our campus community, public safety, and helping our students achieve their higher education goals. To date, individuals affiliated with the university have generally followed these polices, and we appreciate their collaboration.

For instance, during student-led demonstrations on Wednesday, UNLV administration monitored noise levels inside classroom buildings and requested one group to discontinue using a bullhorn, which they did. 

Our university's policies are clear and define the boundaries to allow for free speech and civil discourse for all.  Please be safe and have a successful and peaceful rest of the semester.
