Our Registered Dietitian (RD) is available to provide assistance and guidance in the development of healthy eating habits for students, faculty and staff.
Cost: Free for current students who have paid the Student Health Fee. Current faculty/staff/eligible dependents over age 18 may schedule an appointment for a fee.
Role of the Registered Dietitian (RD)
The RD provides objective, evidence-based nutrition information and to separate fact from myths. Assistance is available in helping you develop healthy eating habits that fit into your individual lifestyle and complement your exercise or activity level.
What Happens During A Visit?
A nutrition consultation includes, but is not limited to:
- Evaluation of current eating habits and behaviors.
- Development of personal nutrition goals to fit into your lifestyle.
An initial appointment is either 30-min or 60-min in length, depending on your reason for visit.
Common reasons for visits include: fad diets, sports nutrition, diabetes management, weight management, healthy eating habits, cholesterol or blood pressure management, and disordered eating/eating disorders.
Individuals with medical needs requiring nutritional modifications will receive individualized nutrition counseling based on their medical condition. NOTE: Some needs/conditions may be referred off-campus or to another medical provider.
Registered Dietitian (RD) v. Nutritionist
A Registered Dietitian (RD) has completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college and completed both academic and experience requirements set by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Commission on Dietetic Registration. The RD must sit for a professional exam and maintain continuing education to maintain credentialing.
In many states, a person must be an RD to use the title nutritionist. In Nevada, a nutritionist can be anyone who chooses to use the title, regardless of whether or not the person has any training in nutrition.
