Advising Philosophy Statement

My advising philosophy and approach to working with students goes above and beyond the task of just developing an educational plan each semester. I am here to serve the student as a whole person by building rapport, creating a safe space by sometimes sharing my own trials and successes and asking questions they might not have been asked. My goal is to give them tools to use after our appointment which will allow them to critically think about why they are here (exploring majors and career options) which will allow them to eventually transition from being a successful college student to starting a career they love.

I like to help make the process to start college, or return to college (for our returning students) as seamless as possible. Sometimes issues arise for students (financial, family obligations, disabilities, etc.) that could easily prevent students from being successful in college. It’s my passion to help students navigate this transitional phase in life, which sometimes includes reaching out to other campus partners (DRC, Financial Aid, Registrar) on behalf of the student so that the student can focus on their learning. I always say “students don’t know what they don’t know”, so it’s up to us to assess their unique situation to guide them in a caring way toward success.
