Latest Updates

We have received the final documents for the proposed remodels and 2nd Student Union facility proposals from our Simpson-Coulter architect partners. It provides information about the historical data, needs, and details on a way to move forward. We are still examining funding pieces and will engage students more with the process soon. Fingers crossed!

UNLV Student Newspaper Support

The UNLV Scarlet and Gray Free Press student newspaper had an opinion piece published on April 15, 2019 supporting the expansion of the UNLV Student Union. Read the article for more information.

Goal and Philosophy

In January 2018, we received survey results from almost 3,000 students. 80% of them said that the Student Union needs to expand and 81% of students have avoided going to the Student Union because it is too crowded and the lines are too long. With the student support, UNLV is launching a program to do a major expansion of the UNLV Student Union. This expansion will provide what students want and need on campus as well as support Top Tier initiatives for UNLV. The end result will be a transformational Student Union able to serve students for decades to come.

The proposed expansion would focus on these core values:

  • Flexibility of space and design
  • Reflecting and serving a diverse campus community
  • Sustainability in design and operations

This is a student-focused project and student support is critical. There are students who are involved who will provide feedback and your voice at the table. This makes it unlike any other design project on campus. Students are creating a Student Union to be proud of. Each UNLV student will have a chance to engage in the future. For staff, faculty, alumni and community – this will be a facility that can support the Top Tier efforts of UNLV as well as a highlight for the next generations of students to come.

Proposed Improvements

From the student survey and focus groups, we know students need more space to gather, sit, eat and connect on campus. This expansion will do that. We also know there is a need for food service and dining changes, recreation needs, Ballroom and meeting room spaces, a large Multicultural Center, late night options, and other needs supporting non-traditional and commuter students. Here are some of the components which might appear in a Student Union expansion:

  • More seating space – individual areas, small group areas, addition of both quiet spaces and social areas
  • Dining revisions – new concepts, healthy options, more seating
  • Multicultural center – genuine places to support our diverse campus community’s needs
  • Recreation/Late night – late night food option with more recreation, possible e-Gaming spaces, social spaces
  • Ballroom/meeting rooms – support student organizations needing space, but not having it on campus
