Setting course for Top Tier: Assessing how to get there from here

Judd Harbin, Ph.D.

In the movie Stargate, the character Dr. Daniel Jackson, an anthropologist, realized that knowing one’s destination was only part of what one needed to know to unlock the titular mysterious ancient device. For the device to open an Einstein-Rosen bridge (or “wormhole”) to another world, it needed both the destination and the point of origin. The pathway to Top Tier sets UNLV’s destination. We still need to know our point of origin. Assessment can help our division and our departments to document and verify where we are today. Then, we can identify what we need to do next and track our contributions toward the Top Tier. This session will include information about campus-wide assessment initiatives and what they tell us about where we are today. Equally important, the session will include discussion and activities to foster creativity and ideas about what the assessment findings mean for us and how Student Affairs programs and services are vital and integral to Top Tier aspirations. Knowledge of the movie or the television serials that it spawned is not necessary to understand this session. Knowledge of statistics, assessment methods, or research methodology is not necessary either. Just bring your sense of wonder and a keen interest or curiosity about exploring the impact of our work in Student Affairs.

Judd Harbin, Ph.D., has served as the Director of Campus Life Assessment at the UNLV since July 2014. Prior to UNLV, he worked at a flagship, land-grant, public university for 16 years during which it transitioned into the top tier. Over his career, his experience crosses several functional areas within student affairs including counseling center, health services, first year programs, family programs, service learning and community engagement, veterans services, adult learner services, international student services, federally funded TRIO (pre-college) programs, business operations, student activities, programming boards, student media, greek life, residence life, and of course, assessment.

Creating Success: a UNLV Medical School Case Study

Dr. Barbara Atkinson

Dr. Barbara Atkinson, Planning Dean for the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV, will speak about the development of UNLV’s medical school and how that addition to our university will push UNLV to Top Tier. Using UNLV as a case study, Dr. Atkinson will share how the team has worked to create a successful strategy for the new medical school and its implementation. UNLV is creating a world-class center for medical education, patient care, and research that prepares Nevada’s doctors with the most innovative and technologically advanced forms of medical training while serving the health care needs of a diverse population through community partnerships. Kerkorian School of Medicine will be a strong force in helping UNLV achieve and maintain Top Tier status.

Dr. Barbara Atkinson is the planning dean for the School, and is an accomplished researcher, teacher and administrator in the fields of medicine and medical education. As planning dean, Dr. Atkinson will work with the UNLV campus to develop a vision for the school, oversee preliminary academic planning and fundraising, and establish a community advisory board to align regional needs with the school’s mission. She has been recognized nationally for her research, teaching and leadership. She is a life trustee and a past president of the American Board of Pathology, where she holds the distinction of being the first woman and the first cytopathologist to be elected as a trustee. She was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1997, and in 2010 was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. She has held faculty appointments with the University of Kansas School of Medicine and Medical Center, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Medical College of Pennsylvania (now Drexel University College of Medicine), MCP Hahnemann University, and Allegheny University of the Health Sciences. The University of Kansas Medical Center established the Barbara F. Atkinson Professorship in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in 2011. The professorship is in the field of cytopathology, a branch of pathology that studies and diagnoses disease at the cellular level.
