Call for Nominations

The Division of Research seeks nominations for the prestigious Harry Reid Silver State Research Award, which honors faculty who have performed research that is both highly regarded and responsive to the needs of the community and state. Application packets are submitted online through the Harry Reid Award Portal.

Eligibility

The award is open to full-time tenured faculty members who are engaged in significant research that meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • Directly and positively affects the economic growth and development of Nevada;
  • Addresses a relevant social need in the community and/or region;
  • Demonstrably advances significant scholarship in an academic field of knowledge.

Nomination Requirements

In order to nominate a colleague for this prestigious award, please notify the faculty member and prepare a formal one to two-page letter of nomination. He/she will include this letter of nomination in their application packet. Be sure and address how the nominee and his/her research meet these criteria:

  • Directly and positively affects the economic growth and development of Nevada;
  • Addresses a relevant social need in the community and/or region;
  • Demonstrably advances significant scholarship in an academic field of knowledge.

Application Packet

Preparation of Application Packet

This packet must be completed by the nominee. Nominees must provide materials to support their nominations. The following materials, which should be compiled as a single PDF for uploading include:

  • Letter of Nomination (2 pages). This may replace one of the letters of recommendation from peer, chair, dean, or supervisor if desired.
  • Letter of Application (up to 5 pages). Outline research activities and how they meet at least one and, ideally, all of the three criteria for the award:
    • Directly and positively affects the economic growth and development of Nevada
    • Addresses a relevant social need in the community and/or region
    • Demonstrably advances significant scholarship in an academic field of knowledge.
  • Current curriculum vitae of nominee that clearly classifies contributions according to the level of peer review.
  • Sample publications or scholarly works (no more than five).
  • A short biography of the nominee (no longer than 400 words).
  • Letter of recommendation from a peer (up to 3 pages).
  • Letter of recommendation from nominee’s dean, department chair, or supervisor if not provided as letter of nomination above (up to 3 pages).
  • Letter from an external community representative (up to 3 pages

The nominee should compile all application materials in a single pdf format and submit them by the deadline through the Harry Reid Award Portal. For examples of work that do not fit pdf format: 1) Books - copy the cover and a few relevant pages and include in the application packet pdf and 2) Videos - submit to facultyawards@unlv.edu by utilizing a file-sharing service, such as WeTransfer.
