Sabra Smith Newby
Vice President of Government and Community Affairs
A native Nevadan, Sabra brings nearly two decades of experience in legislative strategy and government relations throughout Nevada. Most recently, she served as city manager for the City of Reno, where she managed more than 1,200 employees and helped transform the city’s regional policy and strategic priorities. Prior to that, Sabra spent 11 years with Clark County, holding leadership positions in government affairs, administrative services, and in the county manager’s office.
As Vice President of Government & Community Affairs, Sabra will advance UNLV's priorities with key stakeholders statewide. This includes developing and executing a comprehensive strategy for local, state, and federal public policy that supports the university's strategic initiatives and highlights the many benefits of UNLV with our numerous community partners. As a member of the cabinet, Sabra will report to the president and work closely with senior leadership, as well as the UNLV Foundation, UNLV Research Foundation, and the UNLV Alumni Association.
In addition to her roles with the City of Reno and Clark County, Sabra also has experience working with the City of Las Vegas and with KPMG, one of the nation’s leading tax, audit, and advisory firms. She holds a Master of Public Policy degree from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and is actively involved in professional organizations both in Nevada and nationally.
