Luis Valera, J.D.
Vice President for Government Affairs and Compliance
Luis F. Valera is the Vice President for Government Affairs and Compliance for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). In this role, Valera is charged with advocating for the university at the county, state, and federal level and promoting excellence at UNLV through equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Valera was previously appointed by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval to serve as a utilities regulator for the Nevada Public Utilities Commission, a statewide organization that regulates electric, natural gas, water and other utilities. Prior to joining the Commission, Valera was director of government relations for UNLV.
Active in numerous state and community organizations for more than a decade, Valera was the former chairman of the Latin Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development, which advocates for public policy to encourage growth and expansion throughout the job market. He has also served on UNLV's Alumni Board of Directors for the College of Liberal Arts and is former president of the Nevada Tourism Alliance in Las Vegas.
Valera holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees from UNLV, earning a bachelor of arts in political science and juris doctorate from the William S. Boyd School of Law. As an undergraduate, Luis served as student body vice president and as a registered student-lobbyist for UNLV's student government.
