Annual Evaluations

Academic Faculty

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) requires all faculty members to be evaluated in writing at least once annually. At UNLV, all full-time academic faculty members (including faculty-in-residence and lecturers) are evaluated for the calendar year (Jan. 1 - Dec. 31) during the first three months of the following year. The current annual evaluation process for academic faculty is fully electronic and carried out through UNLV Folio.

Administrative Faculty

Administrative faculty are evaluated on their job performance once a year. The process for evaluating administrative faculty varies by department. Please see Evaluation Process—Faculty and Professional Employees for more information.

Tenure and Promotion

Tenure and promotion are important milestones in the career of an academic faculty member. Granted as a reward for teaching, scholarly, and service contributions to the university and to the respective field of study, both honors are designed to build a faculty committed to excellence for the institution and to enhance its reputation. The conferral of tenure and/or promotion follows a rigorous evaluation process involving multiple layers of peer and administrator review. Contact your unit administrator for a copy of your unit’s bylaws and tenure and/or promotion standards/guidelines.

The Sabbatical & Faculty Development Leave Committee considers applications from faculty who are interested in taking a leave for the purposes of furthering studies and/or research.

Emeritus/Emerita Status

Emeritus/emerita status is an honorific awarded to faculty in recognition of an exemplary and extended record of teaching, research, and service at the university. Following the endorsement of the academic community, the President of UNLV may confer the title upon a faculty member who is entering retirement after serving the university with distinction on a full-time basis for a period of at least 10 years.

Conflict of Interest / Outside Compensated Activities Reporting

Conflict of Interest/Outside Compensated Activities reporting is conducted every winter via electronic survey. The Office of Faculty Affairs coordinates this reporting for both academic and administrative faculty members and works with the Division of Research and Economic Development to ensure that faculty who are federally funded operate within federal guidelines.

Faculty Activity Tracking (UNLV Folio)

UNLV Folio is the university’s information management system for administrative reviews. Within its secure and convenient web-based environment, UNLV Folio provides a database and reporting tool for faculty members to document their scholarly achievements.

A faculty member may file a grievance in response to any perceived violation of university regulations or procedures. Grievance petitions are submitted directly to the Faculty Senate.
