Office of Postdoctoral Affairs

Welcome to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. What is a Postdoc? According to the National Postdoctoral Association, "A postdoctoral scholar ("postdoc") is an individual holding a doctoral degree who is engaged in a temporary period of mentored research and/or scholarly training for the purpose of acquiring the professional skills needed to pursue a career path of his or her choosing." There are around 79,000 postdocs involved in research in the United States, with the number expected to steady increase. This increase is due to postdoc positions having become the de facto next career step in many disciplines following the receipt of a doctoral degree (National Postdoctoral Association).

Postdoctoral scholars at UNLV advance research, teaching, and creative activities, helping the university to reach its Top Tier goals. In addition, postdocs can qualify for Associate Graduate Faculty Status. We encourage you to visit this website — a central resource for postdocs — frequently to learn about professional development opportunities, events, and programs.
