Writing Center News, Updates, and Reminders

News

The Writing Center has a new website! Don’t forget to bookmark it for easy access to our hours, online resources, and future updates.

Updates

Our new consultants are now trained and ready for scheduling. We will move out of our reduced schedule hours to offer our full semester hours below:

  • In-person/Quick Questions: Mondays - Thursdays 9 a.m. am - 4 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
  • Virtual: Mondays - Thursdays 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
  • OWLs: Submissions accepted Mondays - Thursdays

Additionally, the expectations for the OWL have been updated. For OWL feedback, our consultants’ comments will reflect what they feel are the most important issues in the draft. Writers will no longer be able to select specific concerns for review. Therefore, the OWL is now better served for drafts that writers would like general feedback on. If your students would like more specific help, please encourage them to make an appointment with us.

Notes and Reminders

Please note: We now ask that instructors notify us if they assign a paper or exam that their students are not allowed to visit us for. We will no longer automatically notify instructors if their students came in for an exam paper unless the instructor has otherwise informed us of said assignment.

Remember that you can support the Writing Center’s offerings by

  • Letting your students know we are here to help! Share our website where they can make appointments, submit to the OWL portal, find handouts and workshops on writing topics, and more.
  • Having them ask us Quick Questions (questions that can be answered in 10 minutes or less) by emailing or sending a chat to us at writingcenter@unlv.edu or by calling us at (702) 895-3908.
  • Encouraging (but please not requiring) your students to get in touch with us the next time they have questions about their writing, want another opinion, or just get stuck. They do not have to wait until the end of the semester or when an assignment is due to visit us!
  • Sharing our video with your students regarding our services and all that we have to offer!

The Writing Center also works with faculty and staff on any writing project, including assignment prompts, letters of recommendation, CVs and application documents, and newsletters. Email or call us if you would like more information about how we can support you.
