Training Available for Creating Digitally Accessible Syllabi

As we continue our efforts to make all documents fully accessible, the office of accessibility resources launched training this past June to help faculty create online syllabi and other educational materials in accessible formats that comply with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.

The two-hour training sessions have included hands-on breakout rooms and optional templates for syllabi and degree sheets for instructors and academic advisors.

Participants who take part in the training as well as submit three accessible syllabi, student handbooks, career information documents, or other educational materials (as verified by the accessibility resources team) for the UNLV website will receive a $500 stipend. The last opportunity to become eligible to earn a stipend for this training will be Oct. 27. There are still a number of spaces available in the five remaining sessions.

All eligible documents must be submitted, graded and corrected by Nov. 15.

The ADA guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities. This equal opportunity includes accessibility of digital materials, such as course syllabi, student handbooks, and degree sheets. NSHE  and UNLV also have policies that require educational materials to be accessible.

“Accessible” means that individuals with disabilities can independently acquire the same information, engage in the same interactions, and enjoy the same services within the same time frame as individuals without disabilities, with substantially equivalent ease of use.
