Kyle Kaalberg is departing his role in the President’s Office to focus on his family, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to him for his extensive service and leadership to UNLV. His skills and dedication have significantly contributed to the university’s achievements over the years, particularly in his recent capacity as executive director for strategy and strategic initiatives in the President’s Office.
In this role, he oversees the university strategic plan, Top Tier 2.0, where he works with campus stakeholders to identify, define, and gather data to assess annual progress toward goals set through 2030. He serves on numerous leadership teams and regularly disseminates information across campus, while also facilitating major strategic campus events, including Datapalooza, Maintaining R1 Workshops, and the Southern Nevada Leadership Summit. In addition, Kaalberg has served as an administrator and mentor for the Philip J. Cohen Scholars Program for over 13 years, providing substantial tuition support to more than 50 students each year.
From 2012-16, Kaalberg served as special assistant to the chief of staff, where he played a crucial role in managing responses to a wide array of issues directed to the president’s office from campus and community constituents. He coordinated presidential events from 2012-15 and managed the Presidential Student Ambassadors program.
Before his tenure in the president’s office, he was active as a graduate student since 2007 and earned a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from UNLV.
Kaalberg previously held teaching and administrative roles in schools in Iowa, Missouri, and Coahuila, Mexico. He achieved National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification in early and Middle Childhood Literacy/Reading-Language Arts in 2004. During his undergraduate studies, he supported himself by working as a school bus driver, eventually advancing to the position of associate director of transportation for the bus company.
Although Kaalberg is transitioning from his current position, he will remain on campus in the spring as a part-time instructor.
Personal circumstances prevented a farewell event; however, he will be present at the President’s Holiday Campus Reception on Dec. 11, where attendees are welcome to greet him. We are profoundly appreciative of his embodiment of the Rebel spirit throughout his contributions to UNLV especially in helping elevate UNLV to R1 status through data-driven initiatives. Moreover, his dedication, compassion, and authenticity have not only made a significant and positive impact within the walls of the Flora Dungan Humanities Building (FDH) but also across the entire campus community.
