Biography

Intermittently homeless as a child with his single mother and two older siblings, John Wagner determined to rise above his situation. He became the first in his family to go to college.

Following college graduation, John began working as an environmental specialist at the Southern Nevada Health District while attending night school and volunteering his time to direct the Nonprofit Nevada Environmental Health Association as its president and executive director. Wagner now holds a graduate certificate in public management and a master's degree in public administration from UNLV.

Today, he serves as the director of community relations at the UNLV Nonprofit, Community and Leadership Initiative. He is dedicated to the initiative’s goals of building capacity, developing leadership and fostering community in the nonprofit and public sectors. John is finishing his Ph.D. in public affairs studying how to maximize the effectiveness of nonprofit board leadership.
