UNLV Theatre and NCT Statement
Dear Friends and Family,
In these moments, it can be difficult to find the right words to express our sorrow and outrage at the senseless loss of innocent black lives. Black Lives Matter. No matter what. We stand firmly with our black brothers and sisters in this fight against injustice. As artists and educators on one of the most racially diverse campuses in the country, we have a responsibility to actively use our platform to agitate and hold a mirror to centuries of racial oppression in the United States.
The recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade are not isolated incidents. They are the latest victims of a long history of racialized violence. As a community, we cannot tolerate bigotry. We must look first within ourselves and then to each other and swear that we can do better. We will do better. In 1967, Martin Luther King said, “A riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it that America has failed to hear?” It is long past time to not just hear, but to listen. We stand in solidarity with black Americans and demand that the authorities in this country honor their human rights.
We urge you to empower yourselves and each other to get involved in whatever capacity you can. In the words of playwright Lynn Nottage, “I feel it’s my social responsibility to shine a light on areas that don’t get seen. My personal feeling is that it’s an artist’s responsibility to be engaged with the culture. And when the culture is going through turmoil, I think an artist can’t ignore that. […] I can’t imagine that you can be an active participant of this culture and not in some way reflect that in the work you are creating.”
