LAS VEGAS — The Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering is proud to announce that Dr. Woosoon Yim, of the Mechanical Engineering Department, has been selected as the recipient of this year’s Harry Reid Silver State Research Award. Yim, Ph.D., Chairman and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, graduated with his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Yim is no stranger to recognition having previously been honored as the Teacher of the Year and as Outstanding Faculty within the Mechanical Engineering Department at UNLV. He has also received the Board of Regent’s Outstanding Faculty Award in 1997. Dr. Yim’s areas of expertise include Dynamics, Active material control and Robotics.
The Harry Reid Silver State Research Award is one of UNLV’s most prestigious awards and was created in 2001 to both honor our United States Senator who has significantly contributed to research in Nevada and to recognize faculty who have performed research that is highly regarded and responsive to the needs of the community and state. Dr. Yim received a letter from President Neal Smatresk and in it he writes, “Your selection is a tribute to your outstanding research achievements which have brought you and UNLV national and international recognition. We applaud the work you are doing.”
Dr. Yim will be honored in the Academic Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 3:30 pm in the Ham Concert Hall Lobby. The award includes a $10,000 stipend to support Dr. Yim’s work.
