UNLV Collegiate Deca To Host Competition Academy For CCSD DECA Students
UNLV Collegiate DECA, a non-profit international student business and leadership organization, will host the Nevada DECA Las Vegas Competition Academy on Dec. 13, 2014, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to prepare high school DECA members for upcoming state and national competitions. This Clark County School District competition scrimmage will be held on the UNLV campus in the Student Union.
The Academy will feature competitive event training, leadership development sessions and industry feedback from local business professionals. Students will receive guidance on how best to prepare for future DECA conferences and in their future careers through interactive role-play scenarios. More than 100 attendees will compete in fields such as hotel management, financial services, sports and entertainment marketing, business management and marketing communications, among others.
Companies such as Citigroup, Wells Fargo, MGM Grand, Massmutual, TJMaxx and several Las Vegas executives and entrepreneurs have registered to judge and provide their unique industry perspective to the competitors during their role-play scenarios.
DECA’s mission to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management is emphasized through its competitive event program held at the local, state and international levels. Participants emerge ready to serve their communities as experienced leaders.
Although some states hold regional competitions as a qualifying round, the Academy will not determine which students move on to compete at the state level. Instead, it merely serves as a learning opportunity for motivated students and to increase the standard of CCSD career and technical education.
In addition to assisting the high school chapters, the UNLV Collegiate DECA chapter coordinated the event. They formed a committee to gain real-world experience in event/conference planning including gaining sponsorships, recruiting judges, and training volunteers.
