UNLV College of Fine Arts Alumnus Paul Rubin brings Broadway show to Las Vegas!
Here are some excerpts from a recent article on the blog of the Smith Center:
When audiences first experienced “The Little Mermaid” on Broadway, the mermaids would swim by rolling across the stage on wheeled shoes. This didn’t impress Glenn Casale.
“He called me and said, ‘Do you think there’s a better way of making mermaids swim on stage?’” recalls Paul Rubin, the tour’s flight choreographer and alumnus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). “I said, ‘Yes - we can actually fly them.’”
Studying theater at UNLV — where tour Director Casale also used to teach — definitely groomed Rubin for his success today, he says.
“It gave me the background to know what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it,” he says.
