UNLV 2018 Archaeological Field School
The 2018 Archaeological Field School at the Elk Ridge Site in Mimbres, New Mexico is now accepting applications! The field school will run from May 21 - July 1, 2018 and is an amazing opportunity to gain archaeological experience in one of the major southwestern culture areas. Information is provided below and we hope you consider taking advantage of this unique opportunity!
The 2018 UNLV Archaeological Field School will be held at the Elk Ridge Site, a large Classic Mimbres (AD 1000-1130) pueblo containing more than 200 rooms located in the Mimbres River Valley of southwestern New Mexico. Students will learn basic excavation and mapping techniques by excavating a series of pueblo rooms that are being damaged by an arroyo. We will also be doing archaeological survey in the area, so students will learn survey techniques. Students learn how to do ceramic and lithic analysis during evening laboratory sessions, attend lectures on the prehistory of the region, and go on field trips to local sites.
Participation in the field school requires signing up for 6 credits of Anth 448B at UNLV. In addition to tuition, the fee for the field school is $1250.00, which includes transportation, food, and equipment. We camp at the Mimbres Cultural Heritage Center and a camp cook provides all meals.
