SOM Student wins NBA 2019 Young Composers Jazz Composition Competition

Jorge MacHain, jazz master student (trumpet) just received the news that he won the NBA 2019 Young Composers Jazz Composition Competition. It is for his piece, “Por Ahora”, composed and recorded by Jazz Ensemble I on a recent CD. He is a student of Nathan Tanouye in the masters of music degree program with a jazz composition concentration.

Jorge’s composition will be performed at the 2019 Midwest Clinic by the renowned US Navy Commodores Jazz Ensemble. 

Jorge has won multiple Downbeat awards for his jazz arrangements, and was a finalist in the 2018 NBA Revelli Composition Contest for his wind orchestra piece "Bite the Bullet," commissioned by Tom Leslie, UNLVs Director of Bands. Jorge was also a finalist for the Morton Gould Young Composer Competition for 2019. Jorge is currently a member of ASCAP.
