Research Activity Metrics Demonstrate Increases in Expenditures, Technology Transfer Activity

Jan. 21, 2015

Research expenditures in the last half of 2014 increased 5 percent over the same period the previous year, and technology transfer metrics indicate increased activity as well.

UNLV research expenditures increased from $15.7 million in the last six months of 2013 to $16.5 million in the same period in 2014. The dollar amount of proposals also increased significantly – by 29.3 percent – during the same time frame. However, proposals, awards, and expenditures declined in the second quarter of the current fiscal year.

Technology transfer activity increased significantly in 2014. Twenty-one UNLV patent applications were filed in the last half of CY14, compared to nine filed during the same period in 2013. License agreements climbed significantly (from 2 to 28) compared to the same 2013 time frame, as did licensing revenue from university intellectual property (from approximately $32,000 to more than $90,000).

Institutional Review Board activity held steady or decreased slightly during the last half of 2014 over the same period the preceding year.
