Replace Your Mercury-Containing Laboratory Equipment Through Risk Management and Safety

Jun. 12, 2017

The disposal of mercury and cleanup of a mercury-contaminated lab can be extremely expensive. Therefore, UNLV Risk Management and Safety (RMS) is requesting that all faculty and staff using lab items containing mercury turn these items in to RMS for replacement with nonmercury counterparts, such as digital thermocouples or spirit thermometers. High-quality models of such equipment are available that meet American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards for accuracy, with no potential hazardous exposures.
For a short time, RMS will pay 50 percent of the cost of replacement equipment in exchange for your lab’s mercury-containing items. Please contact George Fratus at 895-4942 or Ricardo Magallenes at 895-2929 to trade in your items.
Please note that if your lab does not replace its mercury-containing items and there is a spill, the primary investigator and/or department will be held responsible for the cost of the cleanup.
