In remembrance of 1 October

Oct. 1, 2020

Dear Campus Community,

Today, on the third anniversary of 1 October, we pause to reflect on this tragedy and how it profoundly impacted UNLV and our community.

As someone new to this university and this community, I am deeply heartened and touched by the warmth and compassion I have witnessed. Our faculty and staff have shown an unwavering commitment to supporting each other and our students through incredibly challenging times, and our students mirror that support for each other. I have no doubt the same was true three years ago. You clearly are strong and resilient, and I ask that you remember to practice self-care and to reach out for support via the Employee Assistance Program and the Student Counseling and Psychological Services when you need it.

In remembrance of those lost on Oct. 1, we will ring the bell of the clock tower at 11:20 a.m. on the academic mall on the Maryland Parkway campus.

I hope you will pause for a moment of silence during this time, especially if you are on campus and outside near the academic mall.

Thank you. All my best to you and your loved ones.

Warm regards,

Keith E. Whitfield, Ph.D.
UNLV President
