RailTEAM Accepting Proposals for Next Fiscal Year

All faculty and staff in the College of Engineering are eligible to submit proposals and serve as PIs
In 2016, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) selected UNLV to participate in a three-membered research consortium focused on the effective design, construction, and maintenance of high-speed rail projects. The consortium of three universities is spearheaded by UNLV and includes members Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and University of Delaware.
Led by Director Dr. Hualiang Teng, the Tier-1 Railroad University Transportation Center (RailTEAM) focuses on improving the durability and viability of the railway infrastructure to improve the nation’s social well-being and economic growth.
In efforts to continue its mission, RailTEAM is soliciting proposals for the next fiscal year, from October 2020 to September 2021. The Center receives $1M-1.4M each year towards improving rail transportation infrastructure sustainability and durability. Of these funds, $60,000 is budgeted towards supporting a grad student to assist in faculty research.
Since its inception, the Center has supported 19 research projects, 7 that are currently underway at UNLV. These include:
- Mobile 3D Printing of Rail Track Surface for Rapid Repairment
- High Speed Rail Access Charge for the XpressWest of Nevada
- Developing Acoustic Technology to Detect Transverse Defects in Rail at High Speed (220 mph)
The proposal deadline is August 15, 2020. Contact Center Director Hualiang (Harry) Teng (hualiang.teng@unlv.edu) to receive a proposal submission form. Only proposals received by the deadline will be reviewed.
