From President Whitfield: Returning to In-person Work July 1

Jun. 23, 2021

Dear University Community,

I want to thank you for your patience and commitment over the last 16 months as we primarily worked remotely to maintain operations at UNLV during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been a monumental undertaking, and I am grateful for everyone’s continued dedication during this time, and all your hard work.

As we approach July 1, I understand the uncertainty and discomfort some of you may be feeling regarding returning to work on campus. This is another change in a series of many during the pandemic and it will require patience as we undertake this transition.

Fundamentally, university campuses are places where people come together to exchange ideas, and where conversations lead to organic learning and opportunities for collaboration and innovation. The natural dialogue and synergies that occur when we are together on campus forge the camaraderie we share. There is nothing like the energy of a lively campus to create that special experience for students, as well as faculty and staff. It’s a major reason why the workforce will return to campus this summer in preparation for the fall semester.

Human Resources will share more information with you on the flexible work policy later today. I encourage everyone considering this path to read the policy carefully and consult with your supervisor, if you haven’t done so already.

I also want to thank all those serving in frontline, operational, and clinical roles who have maintained our campus and performed in-person services during the pandemic for our university and the broader community. Your work was crucial to helping Southern Nevada – and UNLV – navigate the pandemic and significantly supports our return to a semblance of normalcy and togetherness once more.

Returning to in-person work July 1 helps us prepare to welcome our students back for an outstanding campus experience in the fall. It is a microcosm of what generally is taking place in our community as businesses are reopening to full capacity and activities and events are taking place again.

In closing, I want each of you to know that I truly appreciate all you do for UNLV every day and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Warm regards,

Keith E. Whitfield, Ph.D.
President
