Passing of Dr. Daniel McAllister
A message sent to Lee Business School Faculty and Staff from Dean Tandy
With extreme sadness, I'm writing to inform you that we have lost an esteemed colleague and friend. Dr. Daniel McAllister passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2020.
Dr. McAllister joined the UNLV College of Business in 1982 and taught classes in Principles of Management, Organizational Behavior, Business Policy, Computer Programming, and Management Excellence. He served the Lee Business School and UNLV as an exemplary colleague for 38 years. Faculty members cherished the opportunity to work alongside him.
Dan loved teaching and frequently said he would teach until the day he died. As a result of this passion, he was a master teacher. He received the UNLV Distinguished Teaching Award four times, the Lee Business School Distinguished Teaching Award four times, and the Management/MET Department Teacher of the Year Award nine times. In the history of UNLV, he is the only faculty member to receive teacher of the year honors in three different colleges having won the award in the Business School, the Honors College, and the College of Extended Studies.
Former students frequently reached out to the MET Department Chair and the Lee Business School Dean to express their gratitude for the impact Dan had on their life. This feedback consistently reinforced the idea that, although Dan’s students greatly enjoyed his classes, his impact on them and their lives transcended the classroom and the students’ experience at UNLV. They indicated that Dan was humble, kind and dedicated to the success and wellbeing of his students, enabling him to connect with his students on a personal and meaningful level. In the process, Dr. McAllister instilled confidence, knowledge, and real-world problem-solving abilities in his students. As a result, his students, both current and former, frequently expressed gratitude that he made them better people, developed them for leadership success, and positively transformed both their professional and personal lives.
Dan’s passing leaves a big void in the Lee Business School, UNLV, and our community. Please keep his family in your thoughts during this difficult time. If you would like to send special memories of Dan and/or condolences to his family, you can send them to me at firstname.lastname@example.org. We'll compile them and send them to the family.
The family is planning a funeral service via Zoom in his honor on December 5. We will share details for joining the service when they are available.
In lieu of flowers, Dan’s family requests that donations be made to the Humanitarian Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. You may do so by going to philanthropies.churchofjesuschrist.org and selecting the "In Memory of" option.
